In recent years, traveling via Shinkansen and limited express trains has become a popular activity enjoyed by many, including international visitors to Japan.
To offer a travel souvenir that embodies high-quality Japanese craftsmanship, KATO has released N-gauge models of popular Shinkansen and limited express trains, available for purchase as individual lead cars.

The 787 series "36 Plus 3" entered service in October 2020 as the 12th "D&S" (Design & Story) train from JR Kyushu, created by modifying an existing 787 series trainset. It operates on a counter-clockwise route circling Kyushu's seven prefectures from Thursday to Monday, serving as a sightseeing limited express where passengers can board for specific segments of the journey. The modification involved a complete redesign of both the interior and exterior; the exterior features a glossy black finish with gold accents, creating an aesthetic distinct from the standard 787 series image. The design prioritizes the value of the onboard experience itself over merely viewing the scenery outside; features include windows incorporating *shoji* (paper screens), an interior that highlights natural wood grain, and a configuration where every car is upgraded to "Green Car" (premium class) status. Additionally, the train marks the return of a buffet service to the 787 series after a 17-year hiatus, offering beverages, light snacks, souvenirs, and merchandise for sale.
