The KiHa 40-500 series debuted as a dual-cab diesel railcar designed for cold-weather operations in the Tohoku region.
Units modified for one-man operation on the Ominato Line featured a distinctive red color scheme around the front windows; however, following the introduction of the KiHa 100 series, they were pooled with standard units and remained in service until 2018.
