JR Series 221 Suburban Train Add-on Set
The Series 221 is a suburban train type introduced by JR West in 1989; upon its debut, it was deployed on "Special Rapid" services alongside the Series 117.
The lead cars feature a streamlined nose design with large, curved glass windows. As the first newly built train model following the establishment of JR West, the series was given the nickname "Amenity Liner."
Although the series was withdrawn from Special Rapid service around 2000 following the introduction of the Series 223, it has continued to operate on major lines throughout the Keihanshin area.
Modifications made over time include the addition of yaw dampers to some bogies starting in 1998 and the extension of the lower section of the lead car's skirt (cowcatcher) beginning in 2004.
